What is a MagicBand and who can use one?

Whether they come with your stay on property, or you are staying off property, you can get and use a MagicBand for your Walt Disney World vacation.

On property your MagicBand

  • is your room key
  • holds all your dining plan credits
  • holds your park tickets
  • holds all your FASTPASS+ selections
  • can be linked to a credit card, so it can be used as a form of payment to make purchases anywhere on property
  • is linked to your Memory Maker
A few options on shopDisney.com

But I’m staying off property, can I still have a MagicBand? Yes!! You can, and I suggest you do!

Off property your MagicBand

  • holds your park tickets
  • holds all your FASTPASS+ selections
  • is linked to your Memory Maker

If you are staying off property, or purchased tickets separately from your room, you can very simply and easily link park tickets to a MagicBand in the My Disney Experience app.  A MagicBand can be purchased off shopDisney.com if you don’t have one or want a new one, and comes with very simple instructions on how to link your tickets to it. You could also use any MagicBand that has been assigned to you on any previous trip.  To link new tickets to an old MagicBand, link the tickets to your My Disney Experience app and as soon as they are showing in the app, they should be connected to any and all MagicBands you’ve ever had!

That means that if you have multiple MagicBands from previous trips staying on property, you can bring all of them if you want to have options!  They should all work and be connected to everything!

As soon as the MagicBand is linked to your park tickets, it’s also linked to your FASTPASS+ selections which makes it very quick and easy to scan into the rides you have a FASTPASS for.  It simplifies the process the most if you have children with you, and especially if you are using a rider swap (rider swap post coming very soon!).

Brief overview: during a rider swap, one adult will get a FASTPASS put onto their card or MagicBand. This is the situation where a MagicBand can be super helpful in my opinion because you don’t have to keep track of which one has the FASTPASS added to it (again, explanation post coming very soon!).

If you choose not to have a MagicBand, it is easiest to link your ticket to the My Disney Experience app and simply scan the app to get into the park.  They will give you a little card that will be how you tap into any FASTPASS selections you have made. You can definitely make do with the cards you are given if you have no MagicBands.  I just find it much easier for everything to be right on your wrist, otherwise it is advisable to keep the cards somewhere very easy access so you can get to them when you want to enter a park, use a FASTPASS, or have a PhotoPass photo taken.

Even when we stay off property, we use MagicBands for the ease and accessibility.  If you don’t have one, it is a one time purchase of as low as $14.99, and that is completely worth it to me.
